Pooch Picks – Give the Dog a Bone
By Tania Marie de Saram
When deciding whether to feed bones to your canine, it is always useful to weigh up the pros and cons. Some of the benefits include supplying additional vitamins and minerals, assisting with tartar control on teeth, and providing a source of doggy entertainment.
However, there are also risks associated with feeding bones, as some canines may have sensitive digestive systems that do not respond well to them, or they may break their teeth. And, all dogs are at risk of choking or intestinal damage should a bone splinter not pass through the tract properly, whether supervised or not.
If you do choose to feed them to your pooch, experts generally suggest large and raw bones are better to avoid brittle particles causing any obstructions, and no poultry bones as these can be especially sharp when chewed. It is always good to have a chat with your vet to ensure the safety of your fur baby. ❤
